川合史朗 氏 (Scheme Arts)
タイトル Surviving the industry with minor programming languages
要旨 There seems a common belief that "academic" languages aren't for the real-world programming, and that you have to write in mainstream languages like C++, Java or C# to get a job in the "industry". It isn't necessarily true. In this talk we discuss the ways to leverage yourself with minor but powerful languages outside of research fields.

Ian Piumarta 氏 (Viewpoints Research Institute)
タイトル Steps Toward the Reinvention of Programming
要旨 Fundamental research can be practical, concrete and create immediately useful artefacts. Powerful examples of fundamental research that were practical and had immediate benefits were the inventions of the networked personal computer, dynamic object-oriented programming, the graphical user interface, and the Internet. An excruciating example of an area that still needs much more than incremental improvement is programming, both in the large and in the small. Code is too: large, complex, costly, buggy, insecure, segregated, and inexpressive. We have plans to attempt a qualitative reinvention of programming and to start one of the subprojects this year: to make a practical working mathematical model of a complete personal computer system.
In his talk Dr. Piumarta will give an overview of this five-year research project at Viewpoints Research Institute, funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation. He will discuss the background and philosophy of the approach, and will demonstrate parts of the underlying architecture created so far.
