A personal anecdote. When he joined inria, there was general agreement among management that PL research was dead (C++ had won). The next year, Java came out and took the world by storm. The area still seems healthy.

Lesson: Don't make predictions.

これも同様の至言だと思いました。「現在は／未来は…だから…の研究をすべきである／すべきでない」という、高々数十年〜数年程度で無効になるような近視眼的言説がいかに有害か、私でもよくわかります。（私は参加しなかったので直接は聞いていません。すでに書きましたが念のため。）
